>> the so called black boxes have been recovered. providing investigators with valuable information. they're looking at whether speed or faulty brakes could have caused that accident. >> abc's tahman bradley live at the scene with new details. tahman? >> reporter: good morning, john, and diana. a crane is being brought in to move those derailed train cars still on the tracks this morning. ntsb investigators are expected to be here for a week to ten days. this morning, a search for answers. after a deadly commuter train derailment here in new york city. four people were killed, more than 60 hurt. >> it was like a movie scene. >> reporter: overnight, investigators recovered the black boxes from the mangled metro train in good condition. they'll be looking sba track conditions, the train's equipment, the signal system, and the operator. >> our mission is to understand not just what happened but why it happened. >> reporter: for the more than 100 passengers on board, it was a nightmare.

5:54 a.m. sunday, the train leaves poughkeepsie for grand central. at 7:20, traveling southbound, the train approaches a large curve, jumps the track, train cars roll over, windows pop out, passengers are thrown from their seats. >> everyone was getting thrown around. it was just people flying back and forth. >> on a work day, fully occupied, it would have been a tremendous disaster. >> reporter: also overnight, authorities identified the victims. among them, 54-year-old james lavelle, a lighting expert, father of four, who was headed into manhattan to work on the rockefeller center christmas tree. >> i'll remember him as having dignity, determination, a wonderful father, friend, and neighbor. >> reporter: also killed, 54-year-old donna smith, active in the girl scouts and with her church. >> donna was a wonderful person. she was kind, neighborly, friendly. >> reporter: passengers describe the train as speeding at the curve.

it's not clear if it was traveling faster than normal. investigators will look at that. diana and john? >> tahman bradley, thank you for that report. traveling on northeastern roadways hazardous as well. especially in central massachusetts. that is where dozens of drivers slammed into each other. a giant chain reaction crash, nearly 70 vehicles part of that pileup. freezen freezing rain is being blamed for turning that highway into a sheet of ice. a scary flight from austin texas. it arrived in phoenix saturday night. passengers were being advised by the fire department to get a tb shot after it was revealed that another passenger on board may have had tuberculosis. public health experts, including dr. richard besser of abc, says the risk is low, however, because the flight was so short. the cdc says last night, there was no indication that any passenger was infectious.

the white house says healthcare.gov is now working for the majority of the people that log on. officials say the site is working more than 90% of the time, up from 40% when it began. the weekend relaunch was kept low-key so a flood of people didn't crash the system again. >> people need an easy experience. it hasn't been easy. >> the good thing about when you're down is that you got to where to go but up. >> officials are urging consumers to reach out and call the call center for advanced help. the obama administration is urging north korea to free an elderly american tourist. after he appeared in a new video. 85-year-old merrill newman is seen confessing to war crimes, reading from an awkwardly phrased text. it's the first time he was seen since being detained five weeks ago when he was pulled off a plane with no explanation. >> we just hope whatever that misunderstanding is will be resolved. >> the swedish ambassador

visited newman on saturday and told his family he is is in good health. the family is hoping to have him home before the new year. a bizarre death happening at the broncos-chiefs game. the owner of an suv went to his car, there was a stranger sitting inside. the two struggled. when the stranger tried to run away, he collapsed and later died. he was not shot or stabbed. it will take an autopsy to find out what caused his death. a show of support in the fight against the hiv. the white house was one of the most famous sites. they hung a giant symbolic red ribbon from the portico. pope francis called on people to pray for people with hiv. so everyone will have access to the therapy that they need. in his address from st. peters square, he also asked for prayers for doctors and researchers working to wipe out

the 40-year-old actor attended a toy drive and car show. his 15-year-old daughter and rodass' son was there, too. friend jim spoke to both men before they crashed just a few blocks away from the charity event in a car that can reach up to 240 miles an hour. this is the spot where the crash happened. the inpact was so great that a chunk of the car flew from here into the building. chilly temperatures. it will be down right freezing in the north bay veals and hills. we will have a possibility of showers. i have the full seven-day outlook ahead. >> now, if the fog is causing problems on the roads but right now we see mostly green conditions with top speeds. we have a couple of problems. this is eastbound 580 at mcarthur, the drive, though, headed through emeryville coming up to the macarthur maze. fairfield, westbound 80 at green valley road we have a crash out there but it is not causing delays along the roads. hopefully c.h.p. gets that clear. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza is foggy. use your low beams. it is heavy. from oakland to san francisco, drive safely it is heavy fog.
